How to Pick the Perfect Time for Your Family Photo Session

Did you know the morning and evening are ideal times for photography sessions here on Maui?

While many people immediately think of a sunset beach session when they picture Hawaii, morning can be a wonderful time to capture those vacation memories.

Below I’ve outlined some of the unique aspects of booking a session in the morning and evening, so you can choose the time that best suits your family.

Family of three walking along Maui shoreline holding hands and looking at camera.

Start time: between 6:00am and 7:00am depending on time of year.

Best For:

  • Families with young children

  • Early in the vacation (jet lag = early rising)

  • Shy couples or families

BENEFITS

  • Beaches are less crowded, making for a more intimate session

  • Place session date at the beginning of your trip – you’ll likely be rising earlier due to the time change anyway.

  • Less wind (usually)

  • Can be better for kids’ schedules (versus a 6:00pm evening shoot)

  • Ensures an early start so you’ll make the most of your photoshoot day on Maui

  • Take advantage of popular beaches earlier than most people

  • Easy parking

DRAWBACKS

  • Early rise to prep and travel to the beach

  • Heats up earlier in the day – morning sessions can run hotter than sunset.

Evening Sessions

Start time: between 5:00pm and 6:00pm depending on time of year.

Best for:

  • Late risers

  • Laid-back families

  • Those who want a more “golden” look to photos

BENEFITS

  • Beautiful classic Maui sunset views

  • Plan session before dinner on the west side

  • Comfortable session time at the end of the day

DRAWBACKS

  • Beaches can be crowded at sunset with beach-goers and other families participating in photo sessions

  • Less intimate setting

  • Parking can be a challenge

  • Beaches are often windy at sunset

Whether you book a morning or evening photography session, you are sure to love the experience and your photos. One session time may work better for some families than others, so I do my best to let you know what to expect!
